Vermont License Information

Construction Work Regulated:

Asbestos and lead abatement, plumbing and electrical work is regulated at the state level. Highway construction pre qualification is required of prime contractors.

License Requirements

Asbestos and Lead Certification:

  • Applicants must pass an examination with a minimum score of 70% and provide experience documentation. Application and annual renewal fees range from $50 to $500 depending on certification.

Highway Pre qualification:

  • Contractors must submit experience history and financial statements. The pre qualification is good for 15 months from the financial statement date. The contractors bid limit is based on a formula applied to the financial statements and the type of financials submitted (compiled, audited, etc.).
  • Performance, labor and material bonds are required for contracts awarded by the Agency of Transportation. Performance bonds are required for all contracts exceeding $100,000. Performance bonding on projects less than $100,000 may be waived by the Secretary of Transportation.
  • There were 155 prequalified contractors as of November 1995.

Electricians and Plumbers:

  • Examinations are required for electrical and plumbing classifications.
