Oklahoma License Information

Construction Work Regulated:

Plumbing, mechanical and electrical construction is regulated at the state level. Prequalification is required before bidding or performing any highway work for the state.


License Requirements

Electrical Contractors:

  • Applicants must pass both a business law and a trade examination (including a practical shop exam) with a minimum score of 70%. Five years of experience must be documented as well as posting a $5,000 bond. The initial license and annual renewal fee is $50. The examination fee is $50.00. $50,000 general liability insurance also required.
  • There were 2,000 Licensees as of October 1996.

Plumbing Contractors:

  • Applicants must score at least 70% on a written and practical trade examination and provide documentation of four years of experience. A $5,000 bond is also required. The examination fee is $50 and the residential license and annual renewal fee is $100.
  • There were 1,900 licensees as of October 1996.

Mechanical Contractors:

  • Applicants must pass both a business law and a trade examination with a 70%. Four years of experience and a $5,000 bond are also required. A $50,000 general liability insurance policy must be maintained.
  • There were 3,300 licensees as of October 1996.

Other:

  • Nonresident contractors must post a surety bond or cash deposit for 10% of the contract price or 3 times the tax liability to be incurred under the contract with the Oklahoma Tax Commission.

Reciprocal Agreements

Oklahoma does not have reciprocity with any other states.
