The state also certifies, by examination, plumbing, electrical, hydraulics and HVAC contractors. The actual licensing is done at the local level. This eliminates the need for multiple testing when applying in more than one city.
- Applicants must pass business law and trade examinations and provide documentation of two years experience. The annual renewal fee of $40. The average application processing time is six weeks.
- There were 8,500 certified contractors as of October 1994.
- Public works contracts for the Department of Transportation require a performance and payment bond in the amount of 100 percent of the states estimate of the job. Other public works contracts require a combined bond equal to the contract, or a letter of credit, certified check or cashier's check for 10 percent of the contract value.
Asbestos abatement contractors may receive a license by reciprocity if it is proven that the other state's requirements are equivalent to Ohio's.
