Maine License Information

Construction Work Regulated:

Plumbing and electrical work is regulated at the state level as well as asbestos abatement and underground oil storage tank installation and removal.

Prequalification is rarely required on Department of Transportation contracts.


License Requirements

Asbestos:

  • Contractors shall be certified annually, after completing an approved training course. A trade examination is required with a passing score of 70%. As of December 1995 there were 55 licensed contractors. The average application processing time is two weeks.

Underground Oil Storage Tanks:

  • Certificates of Installers and removers are renewed for two year periods. Upon the payment of a $150 fee and completion of 8 hours of approved continuing education. The certification of installers require the passing of an initial examination, the installation of 6 underground tanks and passing a final exam. Applicants for a removal certificate must pass an examination and complete one (1) supervised removal (by Environmental Protection).

Other:

  • Unless otherwise exempted public works contracts exceeding $50,000 require a performance and a payment bond equal to the amount of the contract.

Reciprocal Agreements

The Commissioner of Environmental Protection may enter into reciprocity agreements with states having similar licensing and certification requirements for asbestos abatement projects.
