Iowa License Information

Construction Work Regulated:

New construction, additions, alterations, reconstruction or repair of structures may require state registration. All work performed for the state or a state agency requires registration.

Construction work generating less than $1,000 annually or work by owners on their property is not subject to the registration requirements.

All Department of Transportation contracts require the prime contractor to be pre qualified.


License Requirements

Construction Work Regulated:

  • Contractors shall show proof of compliance with the workers' compensation law and obtain a special contractor or employer account number from the Division of Job Service before making an application.

  • Out-of-state contractors must provide a surety bond equal to 5 percent of the contract price or $1,000, whichever is greater, before starting a contract in excess of $5,000. A $50,000 bond may be provided to cover any number of contracts up to $1,000,000.

  • There are no examination requirements.

  • The application and renewal fee for the two year registration period is $25. There were 16,100 registered contractors as of October 1996. The processing time for applications is is approximately four weeks.

Reciprocal Agreements

Iowa does not have reciprocity agreements with other states.
