Connecticut License Information

Construction Work Regulated:

Commercial, residential and public works construction that exceeds the threshold limits is regulated at the state level. The limits are as follows:

Institutional facilities: 150 beds or persons.

Residential Use: 200 rooms or single structure with 100 dwelling units, single structure with hotel or Multi-family.

Storage Use: 1,000 cars or 250,000 square feet for parking structures.

Pre-qualification is also required in order to bid on Department of Transportation work.

Home improvement construction exceeding $1,000 for all contracts in a 12 consecutive month period requires licensing.

Plumbing, electrical, well drilling, heating, piping and cooling work is also regulated.

An owner performing work on his own premises is exempt from the licensing requirements.


License Requirements

Home Improvement:

  • Contractors must deposit $100 to the Home Improvement Guaranty Fund and post a bond of $10,000 if ordered by the Commissioner.

General Contractors or Major Subcontractors:

  • Must prove public liability and property damage insurance. Upon renewal of a contractor's license, licensees must prove compliance with the state workers' compensation requirements..

Other:

  • A performance, payment bond in the amount of the contract is required on public works contracts exceeding $25,000.

Electricians:

  • Applicants are required to take a business law and a trade examination passing with a 70%. The applicant must have six years of experience. The average processing time for a new application is 3 weeks. There were 7,500 licensees as of October 1, 1993.

Well Drillers:

  • Contractor applicants must document three years of experience.

Reciprocal Agreements

Connecticut does not have reciprocity with any other states.
