Alaska License Information

Construction Work Regulated:

Virtually every aspect of commercial, residential and public works construction is regulated at the state level in Alaska.

Prequalification is not required for public works projects. However, a valid contractor registration is required before bidding on a project.

License Requirements

  • Licensees must possess a valid State of Alaska business license, which is issued in conjunction with the contractor registration.

  • The average processing time for new applications is three weeks.

  • Mechanical and specialty contractors are required to post a commercial or negotiable surety bond or make a cash deposit in the amount of $10,000.

  • Contractors are also required to provide proof of insurance in the minimum amounts of $20,000 property damage, $50,000 for death or injury to one person and $100,000 for death or injury to more than one person.

  • Every general, specialty or mechanical contractor awarded a public works contract exceeding $100,000 must provide a payment bond. A municipality may exempt contractors from the public works bond provision if the estimated cost of the project does not exceed $400,000.

  • There were 4,700 registered contractors as of October 1996.
